Kanakkil Kondattam (Celebration with Math) seeks to improve the quality of math education in Tamil Nadu by developing new instructional material and techniques for teaching mathematics to children in classes 6-8. The project is administered by AID Jeevan Saathi Ravishankar Arunachalam in co-operation with the state government of Tamil Nadu. A pilot project was done in a block of 100 schools in Chennai using activity-based and fun-filled teaching methods, rather than the rote-based methods that pervade most of India's classrooms today. The first year of the project has been a thorough success, covering topics such as fractions, geometry and algebra. The students were tested before and after the classes, and most showed a tremendous improvement in the understanding and application of the topics covered, along with a new-found enthusiasm for math. More support is solicited so that these ideas can be used across Tamil Nadu and ultimately all of India.
