The Khajurdha Nabankar United Club (KNUC) is an NGO that was founded in 1980 and has served the Hooghly and Bardhaman Districts in West Bengal, India for nearly 30 years. With 12 current projects, the KNUC’s goal is to enhance the health, education, social and economic status and protect & promote rights of all within the Hooghly and Bardhaman Districts, especially vulnerable populations comprising of children, women, aged and the disabled. One particular problem area identified was the staggering 36% infant mortality rate in the Hooghly District. Even with KNUC’s maternity center established in 2003, it appeared that many women could not reach this 20-bed center for essential care. To address this issue, the KNUC established a Mobile Health Service initiative in 2006, creating 10 additional sub-centers to more effectively serve the 70 villages and 80,000 people living in the Hooghly District. Within one year, the infant mortality rate was reduced from 36% to 30%.
