To combat the severe drought in Anantpur District that prevented the sowing of groundnuts, the annual crop, AID along with the Timbuktu Collective encouraged cultivation of millets such as Korra, saama, sorghum and pulses. Millets are climate-resistant crops and can sustain water scarcity. They are highly nutritious and hence ensure food security for both farmers and livestock. Further, they can be stored for many years and can help them with similar drought situation in future. Furthermore, they are also highly beneficial to groundnuts when crop-rotated with cereals, increasing the soil fertility. With sorghum and pulses currently being sponsored by the state government's contingency plan, a proposal has been sent to the government to include small millets as well. The project, led by Dinesh Kumar from Timbuktu Collective along with other NGOs, aims to provide millet seeds to farmers to support this cropping plan proposal and also address market issues for the same.
